I’ve never done a large family session before. Yes I photograph big family groups at weddings, but a vacation session is a completely different game. So when I got the inquiry from Jennifer via Flytographer about photographing her family’s four generations together, I was a little nervous. The thing that kept me at ease is knowing that some members of the family had used Flytographer before and knew what to expect. This amazing family was ready to be photographed having fun together!

Jenn’s family met in Galveston to spend Mother’s Day weekend together enjoying the beach, with her sister and brother-in-law, parents and grandmother also making the trip. Four generations together for a special weekend. Jenn just knew they had to get some photos and the location was perfect. Her sister Jessica and Joe had used Flytographer on their honeymoon and loved the process and their photos, so it was an easy decision.

We met in Beachtown, one of my absolute favorite places to do a session in Galveston. It was the epitome of perfect weather! Everyone was excited and ready to have some fun…especially Jenn’s daughters Aubrey and Alayna. We started in the town center with some photos of the four generations of ladies. These ladies can laugh together so easily. As we made our way through the town center, I snagged some photos of the littles. Alayna is so funny and such a ham for the camera. She absolutely loves her big sister and wanted to do all the “poses” with her.

As we walked up the beach access pavilion I could see the girls get excited at the glimpse of water. They were ready to play with their beach ball. While we waited for the pavilion to clear, Alayna was smooching on her grandpa while Aubrey stole her Uncle Joe’s sunglasses for a quick photo. After a few shots of the whole group we hit the sand. The beach ball was in play and it was a free for all!

The sun was sinking in the sky and gave us a pastel sunset fit for a watercolor painting. The littles and their Uncle Joe decided a jump shot with the beach ball was a must, so we made that happen! Who doesn’t love a jump shot?!?!?! The jump shot was followed by synchronized cartwheels and wails of laughter from the rest of the family. Uncles are the best…am I right?! To close out our time together, everyone dipped their toes in the warm Gulf waters for a final group photo.

Moments like these go by so fast. I know I look at photos of my nephew from just a few years ago and think how they passed in a blink. It’s important to keep from living your entire life from behind a camera, but it’s equally important to make the time to experience and record the moments that will matter later on.
